Dear Tipperary Supporter

FBD Insurance County Championships

From Tipperary GAA Scene by Jonathan Cullen, County Board PRO

Last weekend saw the conclusion of the group stages of the senior premier intermediate and intermediate championships in hurling. In the senior hurling championship the action got underway on Saturday afternoon with two games in group 3. In Littleton Holycross Ballycahill were comfortable winners over CJ Kickhams Mullinahone on a full time score of 1-26 to 0-15, while in FBD Semple Stadium Upperchurch Drombane and Toomevara served up a much closer game that resulted in a 3 point win for the mid men, 1-16 to 0-16. These results now mean that Upperchurch Drombane top the group with Toomevara in second place, Mullinahone finished bottom of the table and will now contest the relegation semi finals.

The final game in group 1 between Clonoulty Rossmore and Kilruane MacDonaghs took place in Templetuohy on Sunday and in a very close and keenly contested game, it was MacDonaghs who came away with the points as they won by 3-15 to 1-20. By virtue of this win the north side top the group and they are joined in the Quarter Finals by Nenagh Eire Óg in second place, while Moycarkey Borris who finished bottom must now prepare for a relegation game.

In group 2, Dolla was the venue for the clash of Templederry Kenyons and Thurles Sarsfields and again this game was very well contested with the Thurles side being pushed all the way by their opponents before they eventually got the goals they needed to push on and win by 2-19 to 2-13. In FBD Semple Stadium Drom & Inch were pushed all the way by neighbours Borris-Ileigh in a game that had lots of great scores including some from very long range. In the end Drom & Inch were victorious by the narrowest of margins 1-15 to 0-17. Drom & Inch finish the group stages in top position having won all their games, while Thurles Sarsfields also qualify for the knockout stages finishing in second place. Templederry Kenyons finished bottom of the group and so must now contest the relegation semi finals.

In group 4 Kiladangan enjoyed a comfortable 3-13 to 1-14 win over mid champions JK Brackens in FBD Semple Stadium and in doing so finished in top place in the group. Loughmore Castleiney travelled to Holycross to play Eire Óg Annacarty knowing that a win was required to be certain of qualification to the next stage of the championship. The 2021 champions did not get it all their own way and as the game entered the closing stages it could have gone either way, but in typical Loughmore Castleiney fashion they held out for the win and secured their place in the next round. Unfortunately for Eire Óg Annacarty they must now prepare for the relegation stages.

In the premier intermediate championship Roscrea secured their third win of the campaign in group 2 when they defeated Moyne Templetuohy by 3-17 to 1-15 on Saturday in Borrisoleigh, also in group 2 on Saturday Silvermines overcame Kiladangan by 0-15 to 0-13 to pick up the points they needed to finish in second place. Kiladangan finish the group on the bottom of the league table which means they now go into the relegation saages of the championship. In group 1 Burgess and St Marys met in Boherlahan and it was Burgess who produced a winning performance, overcoming the Clonmel side by 0-23 to 0-14 which meant that they finished the group on 3 points. Newport and Sean Treacys met in the other game in the group in FBD Semple Stadium and it was all to play for in this one as both sides could qualify. It looked as if Sean Treacys were destined for the knockout stages as the game entered the closing stages, but late goals from Newport put all that in doubt. When the final whistle was blown Sean Treacys were victorious by 1-22 to 4-11 but on score difference they lost out on qualification to the next stage to Burgess who have qualified in second place behind St Marys.

Group 4 was the group of champions as all four teams had already won their divisional championships and in doing so had secured at least a preliminary quarter final spot. That being said, all of the teams would have set out in the county championship with the aim of reaching the quarter finals through the group. In Nenagh on Saturday, Clonakenny and Portroe met to essentially decide who would qualify in second place and in a high scoring game it was Portroe who were the winners by 3-21 to 4-14. In the other game in the group Cashel King Cormacs defeated Carrick Swan by 2-15 to 2-09 to cement their place at the top of the table with three wins from three. Carrick Swan who finished in bottom place, now head into the relegation stages.

In group 3, Gortnahoe Glengoole travelled to play Ballina in Borrisoleigh in the knowledge that they had already reached the quarter finals and they continued on their winning ways finishing the group with full points, thanks to a convincing 2-15 to 2-09 win. The other game in the group took place in Golden and was between Thurles Sarsfields and Killenaule, with both teams knowing that a win would put them in second place. The sides swapped the lead on a number of occasions during the game, but it was Thurles Sarsfields who were ahead when it mattered as they won by 0-24 to 0-20. The result left Killenaule in third place and out of the championship while Ballina must now get ready for a relegation game.

In the intermediate championship Moneygall and Cappawhite qualified from group 1 with Ballybacon Grange in bottom position. In group 2, last years Junior A county champions Skeheenarinky top the table with Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams and Borrisokane having to play a playoff game to decide who will finish in second place. Both teams finished the group stages on the same points as well as having the same scoring difference, scores for and scores against.

In group 3 Drom & Inch top the table with Kilsheelan Kilcash in second place, while Shannon Rovers finished in fourth place and head for the relegation stages. Group 4 sees Lorrha Dorrha finish on top with Golden Kilfeacle in second place while Carrick Davins who finished in fourth place must prepare for the relegation stages.

Order of Malta Fundraiser

A sincere thank you to everyone who supported our fundraiser in aid of the Order of Malta which took place at last Sundays senior hurling championship game between Clonoulty Rossmore and Kilruane MacDonaghs. The generosity of all those who attended the game was simply overwhelming. Tipperary GAA are still offering the clubs of the county an opportunity to make a donation to this fund, a suggested €50 would be greatly appreciated.

A GoFundMe page has also been set up to facilitate donations from individuals who may not have been able to attend the game but would like to donate. The link to the donation page is: https://gofund.me/2e9f5f92

Celebration of Teams of the Past

The preliminary quarter finals of the county senior & premier intermediate hurling championship will take place in Semple Stadium this Sunday September 11th . Spectators will be able to witness much more than the two games involved because the county board will use the occasion to honour two hurling teams from the past, the 1971 All-Ireland county senior team of 1971 and the Roscrea team that won the first All-Ireland club championship in 1971. To add to the occasion the county board will honour the survivors of the All-Ireland winning teams from 1949 to 1965, sixteen players in all. The two games on the day will take place at 1 and 3 pm with the players introduced to the spectators between the two games. Following the games the players will be treated to dinner in the Dome. A special booklet will be produced to honour this very special occasion.
