PHILLY RYAN R.I.P.Tipperary GAA is in shock at the news that the county football manager, Philly Ryan, has died unexpectedly. Philly was a legendary figure, particularly among the football community which he served so well in his 16 years on the senior county team. There may have been better keepers but there were few braver than the Commercials man. His service didn’t end there as he recently took up the role of manager of the senior team and it is a mark of the man he was that he was prepared to step into the breach in what is generally recognised as a low ebb for football in the county. But he always just wanted to manage Tipp. And loyalty was very important to him: he was loyal to his teams, his club and his county. Philly was a popular and genial figure and his passing will leave a huge abyss, not only in his beloved Clonmel but much farther afield. He was connected directly to the hurling fraternity through his nephew, Darragh McCarthy, in whose achievements he took immense pride. The second county senior football semi-final between Clonmel Commercials and Upperchurch-Drombane, set for today, has been postponed. As a mark of respect for Philly, a minute's silence was held before the Dublin football final between Ballyboden St Enda’s and Na Fianna last night. Our condolences to his immediate and extended family. CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPSAs noted above, today's football semi-final is postponed. Loughmore Castleiney's bid for the double-double came to a halt yesterday when Kilsheelan Kilcash produced a storming finish to win an exciting game by 2 points.Loughmore have of course a timely chance to make amends when they face Nenagh Éire Óg in the hurling decider next weekend in what promises to be a thriller.
