Tipperary Press Release – Paddy Doyle RIP

The death has occurred of Paddy Doyle, Moyne Road, Thurles.

Son of Jerry and Bridget Doyle, Paddy was born in 1941 into a family steeped in GAA tradition. He was an All-Ireland Senior Hurling winner with Tipperary in 1965 alongside his late brother Jimmy who captained the side. Prior to that Paddy won 2 All-Ireland Minor Hurling medals in 1957 and ’59. No stranger to Gaelic football either, Paddy played senior and minor football for Tipperary, captaining the senior side in 1961.

However, it was at club level Paddy really made his mark having enjoyed huge success with his own club Thurles Sarsfields where he won 7 Tipperary Senior Hurling Club titles and 1 Tipperary Senior Club football title with Thurles Crokes.

Outside of his various roles with Thurles Sarsfields, Paddy also managed Tipperary minor hurling teams, losing out in an All-Ireland final to Offaly in 1987.

He was involved with coaching Moycarkey-Borris, Lorrha-Dorrha, Borris-Ileigh and the Laois inter-county hurling team. The highlight of these roles was winning an All-Ireland Senior Hurling club title with Borris-Ileigh in 1987. Previous to that in 1984, Moycarkey-Borris won a Tipperary Senior Hurling crown under the astute watch of Paddy.

In January 19, 2019, Paddy was inducted into Thurles Sarsfields Hall of Fame. Paddy has served Thurles Sarsfields as a player, coach, selector, manager, club chairman and at the time of his passing, he was vice-president of the club.

Tipperary Co. Board chairman, John Devane said in tribute, “Paddy Doyle was one of the most knowledgeable GAA men I have ever met. As a player, coach and mentor at both club and county level and also as a long time administrator at Thurles Sarsfields, he served this great organisation well. He was an absolute gentleman and I always enjoyed a chat with him.”

Predeceased by his beloved wife Kay, his brother Jimmy and his sister Olive, Tipperary Co. Board wishes to express its sympathy to his daughter Karen, son David, son-in-law Liam, Richelle, sisters Anna and Breda, his grandchildren Eve and Kate, nieces, nephews, extended family, relatives and friends and to Thurles Sarsfields GAA.

Funeral arrangements to be announced later.
