Tipperary players feature in Fitzgibbon Cup

WIT 0-15 UCD 1-12

WIT and UCD played out an entertaining 0-15 to 1-12 draw in the opening round of the Fitzgibbon Cup at Carriganore on Thursday.

The sides were level at 0-6 apiece at the break, but WIT had the strong breeze at their backs in the second half and looked set to press home the advantage.

However, nine minutes into the second half, UCD surged into the lead with a well-worked goal, Dublin Senior star Liam Rushe applying the finish.

But with Tipperary’s Timmy Hammersley in fine form from placed balls, WIT took a two-point lead into the closing ten minutes.

Scores from Noel McGrath and Keith Hogan, however, rescued a draw for the Dublin students.

UL 1-15 UCC 0-16

Tipperary veteran Paul Kelly was the UL hero at Plassey on Thursday, with his goal five minutes from time giving the Limerick students a narrow win over their Leeside counterparts.

UL led by 0-9 to 0-6 at the break, but they endured a difficult third quarter in which they hit an alarming number of wides and fell seven points in arrears.

However, they managed to find their form again and hit eight successive points to regain the lead.

When Kelly found the net in the closing stages, the victory was assured, with Shane Bourke providing the solitary reply for the Leesiders.

St Patrick’s-Mater Dei 2-22 UUJ 0-10

St Patrick’s-Mater Dei displayed their Fitzgibbon Cup credentials with an impressive 2-22 to 0-10 defeat of UUJ at Mobhi Road.

The Dublin side were 1-10 to 0-5 ahead at the break, with goalkeeper Eoin O’Reilly driving home a 26st minute goal from a 21-yard free.

Liam Ryan dominated the game at midfield for Sat Pat’s-Mater Dei, while Canice Maher rounded off a hugely satisfying afternoon with a wonderful goal on 57 minutes.
