Since its opening fifteen years ago, Dr. Morris Park in Thurles has been of enormous benefit as a training facility for Tipperary inter-county teams. Situated beside Semple Stadium, it is one of the best training facilities in the country. Last Sunday, April 1, the third pitch at Dr. Morris Park was officially opened by Sean Walsh, Chairman of Munster Council and blessed by His Grace, Dr. Dermot Clifford, Archbishop of Cashel and Emly. Also present were Sean Nugent, Chairman of Tipperary County Board and present and past officers of the Board. Sean Walsh, Dr. Clifford and Sean Nugent in their addresses all emphasised the importance of Dr. Morris Park to Tipperary and the excellent standard of the new sand based pitch which will be usable in virtually all weather conditions. The acquisition of land and development of the new pitch has cost approximately €1.6m which has been funded by GAA grants and Tipperary County Board. Tipperary County Board have further plans for developing Dr. Morris Park and these were outlined by Sean Nugent, County Chairman last Sunday. A priority development will be a hurling wall. Also on the development agenda are enhanced floodlighting of pitches for winter training, improving and expanding the dressing rooms and construction of a stand for spectators at one of the pitches. Tipperary County Board will be seeking sponsorship to fund some of these developments and will also be hoping to secure GAA grants and Government sports grants. Examples of the usage of Dr. Morris Park are under 12 go games blitzes, underage development squads training and inter-county hurling and football team training. The availability of facilities such as those at Dr. Morris Park have contributed significantly to Tipperary’s inter- county success at hurling and football in recent years. Tipperary County Board is determined to maintain and develop the facilities at Dr. Morris Park because it believes high quality infrastructure is an essential prerequisite to success on the field of play. Tipperary County Board would like to thank all those who made the purchase and development of the new pitch possible and looks forward to seeing it in use during the summer ahead and for many years into the future.
