Tipperary Association Dublin – Soloheadbeg Centenary Commemorations

The Soloheadbeg ambush on 21st January 1919 is accepted as been the start of the War of Independence, 1919 – 1921 – 100 years ago this year.  To mark the Centenary a number of events have been organised by the Local Solohead Organising Committee involving talks, lectures, site visiting, panel discussions and exhibits over a number of days.


Some of the events are as follows :-


Tuesday 15 January 2019 at 7.30 pm in Tipperary Library, The Source, Thurles


Tipperary People and Places Lecture Series – Soloheadbeg Ambush – A Century Perspective by Dr Denis Marnane.




Saturday 19 January 2019


10.00 am to 4.30 pm Ballykisteen Hotel, Limerick Junction €20 pp


The Soloheadbeg Ambush – Impact and Legacy


A one day history conference with speakers, panel discussion and exhibits.





Saturday 19 January Brú Ború Cashel at 8.00 pm


Musical evening with Derek Warfield and the Young Wolfe Tones Tickets €15 www.borubru.ie


Sunday 20 January 2019


Mass of Remembrance at 11.30 am at Solohead Church, followed by formal commemorations by Dr Martin Manseragh and Eamonn Ó Cuiv, T.D. www.facebook.com/soloheadbeg.centenary/ref-bookmarks


2.30 pm Wreath laying and oration by Third Tipperary Brigade Old IRA at the ambush site


Monday 21 January


One day tour of ambush site and related sites


Some Members of the Association propose to attend the Lecture in Thurles on Tuesday 15 January and the commemoration in Solohead on 20 January. For those of you who may be interested in attending any of those events please note that shuttle bus transport is being arranged from the racecourse to Solohead.  Anyone travelling by train might note that Limerick Junction Railway Station is only a short walk from the racecourse and a shuttlebus connection to Solohead.
