TIPP SUPPORTERS CLUB NEWSLETTER 4 JULY 2014

Dear Tipperary Supporter

All Ireland Championship Qualifiers
From Tipperary GAA Scene by Andy Fogarty County PRO

Semple Stadium will host a double header on Saturday when both the Tipperary senior hurlers and footballers will play hosts to Galway and Longford respectively in the All-Ireland Championship Qualifiers. The second-round SF Qualifier draw took place live on Morning Ireland on Monday morning. The draw involved the eight first-round winners plus the eight beaten provincial semi-finalists. Tipperary who went so near to defeating Cork in the Munster SF championship semi-final will play Longford at home. If Tipperary can perform to their potential and produce the form they showed against Cork they are well capable of defeating Longford and progressing to the next Round. This game commences at 4.45 pm, so we encourage supporters to come early and lend your support to the team.

After last Saturday’s Leinster SH championship semi-final replay Kilkenny go to Croke Park on Sunday to play Dublin in the Leinster final and Galway come to Semple Stadium to play Tipperary on Saturday evening in Rd 1 of the qualifiers. In 2010 the last time we won the All Ireland we met Galway at the All Ireland quarter- final stage. Tipperary defeated Galway by 3-17 to 3-16 in a thrilling game in Croke Park. With the game tied near the finish Tipp sub, Pa Bourke, produced a defence-splitting run before parting to Lar Corbett, who turned, and scored the winner to send Tipperary into the All Ireland semi-final. Galway are coming to Thurles after two mighty clashes with Kilkenny in the Leinster SH championship semi-final, however Tipperary have trained well since their defeat to Limerick and the team is eagerly awaiting this game. The fact that the game is in Semple Stadium is an advantage to the team and we look forward to huge support for both the hurlers and footballers on Saturday evening. Throw – in is at 7pm. We wish both teams the very best of luck.

Munster Intermediate Hurling Final

Tipperary attempts to win three-in-a-row Munster Intermediate hurling championships came to an end at Pairc Uí Rinn last Wednesday evening. David Drake’s hat-trick of goals helped Cork to a 4-15 to 2-8 win over Tipperary. Drake opened the scoring with a goal in the third minute and he bagged his second goal within five minutes as the hosts led by 2-0 to 0-1. The Leesiders took an eight-point advantage into the interval, 2-6 to 0-4. Mark Sugrue chipped in with the third goal shortly after the restart and Michael Sheedy and Kieran Morris got goals for the Premier County. Drake completed his hat-trick three minutes from time as the Rebel County captured the silverware. We thank the team and panel for the great effort they put in over the past number of months and we also thank the management team, Manager John Carroll from Roscrea and his selectors John Ryan (Upperchurch-Drombane), Sean O Meara (Mullinahone) and Anthony “Brickie” O’Neill (Cappawhite) for all their work.

County “Poc Fada” Finals 2014

The County Finals of the Tipperary U16 Boys and Senior men’s “Poc Fada” took place on Saturday 28th June on the Galtee Mountains. In great weather conditions five senior and four U16 contestants tackled a very rigorous course laid out on the foot of Galteemore. The first 1200 Metres of a 3 Km course was all uphill, which demanded great energy and effort from the players.
The senior contestants were Seamus Butler Sean Treacys, Bill McCormack Moycarkey Borris, Brian Moroney Aherlow, Niall Shinners Kilruane McDonaghs and Daryl Ryan Roscrea.

Each contestant was designated a marker and a flag man before the start. Underfoot conditions were challenging and players had great difficulty in keeping their balance while trying to get as much distance as possible with each puck. The players, with their marker and flag man had to plot a way through the gorse and heather to avoid losing the ball. Loss of the ball meant loss of a shot and a further lost ball was elimination from the contest. Thankfully this did not happen to any player.

An hour and a half later and after a great battle Bill McCormack ran out the winner by two shots, 34 pucks total, from Daryl Ryan in second on 36 pucks. Seamus Butler and Brian Moroney each finished with 38 pucks and Niall Shinners finished on 40 pucks.

The U16 competition, over a shortened course, was very closely contested. Shane Stapleton Sean Treacys and Diarmuid Ryan Clonakenny both had 23 pucks crossing the finish line. Shane was crowned winner by virtue of his puck being furthest past the post. Michael Whelan Carrick Davins was a well-deserved third on 24 pucks with Kevin Shinners Kilruane MacDonaghs on 26.Winning contestants will receive a specially commissioned County Long Puck Medal. The winners will now go on to represent Tipperary, at the same venue, in the Munster Long Puck Final, on July 12th. Sincere thanks to all for a very successful event. Thanks to the Aherlow club for again hosting the competition with special thanks to Pat and Michael Moroney for laying out the course and to the local farming community for use of the land.

Ladies Munster Football Championship Launch

The TG4 Munster Senior and Intermediate Football Championship was launched recently in Aras Mumhan, Limerick. In attendance were the McDonnell family, Templemore where the Munster Intermediate Cup was renamed the Enda McDonnell Cup, in memory of the late Munster Ladies Gaelic Football President. Enda McDonnell, who worked tirelessly promoting Ladies Gaelic Football both locally and nationally. At Tipperary Ladies Football matches one would always find and hear Enda on the side line and he took immense pleasure in attending the All Ireland Final last year in Croke Park. His wife, Olive was deeply honoured by the renaming of the Cup.
