TIPP SUPPORTERS CLUB NEWSLETTER 29 MARCH 2013

Dear Tipperary Supporter

ALLIANZ HURLING LEAGUE

FROM TIPPERARY GAA SCENE BY COUNTY PRO GER RYAN

The Tipperary senior hurling team to play Clare in the Allianz hurling league on Sunday has 6 changes from the team which started against Waterford last Sunday. In a continuation of the goalkeeper rotation policy, Darren Gleeson takes over from Brendan Cummins and the other changes see Paddy Stapleton, Conor O’Mahony, Brendan Maher, John O’Dwyer and Eoin Kelly come into the team instead of Donagh Maher, Thomas Stapleton, James Woodlock, Brian O’Meara and Adrian Ryan. The team is:

1.      Darren Gleeson (Portroe)

2.      Paddy Stapleton (Borris-Ileigh)

3.      Paul Curran (Mullinahone)

4.      Michael Cahill (Thurles Sarsfields)

5.      Conor O’Brien (Éire Óg Annacarty)

6.      Conor O’Mahony (Newport)

7.      Padraic Maher (Thurles Sarsfields)

8.      Brendan Maher (Borris–Ileigh)

9.      Shane McGrath (Ballinahinch) CAPTAIN

10.  Shane Bourke (JK Brackens)

11.  Lar Corbett (Thurles Sarsfields)

12.  John O’Dwyer (Killenaule)

13.  Eoin Kelly (Mullinahone)

14.  Seamus Callanan (Drom & Inch)

15.  Noel McGrath (Loughmore Castleiney)

Tipperary’s 1 point defeat by Waterford by 1-14 to 0-16 means that Tipperary could qualify for the semi-finals, be relegated or simply just finish 4th and remain in Division 1. Last Sunday was only the 5th league encounter of 41 between the counties in which Tipperary failed to score a goal and interestingly it was the only one of those 5 goalless Tipp performances which failed to yield a victory. Tipperary’s final game in this stage of the league campaign will be against Clare at Semple Stadium at 3pm next Sunday. With a semi-final spot guaranteed for the winners, it’s effectively a league quarter-final and should therefore be a game well worth attending. This will be the 50th Hurling League meeting between the counties. Tipperary lead the way win 35 wins, Clare were victorious on 10 occasions and there were 4 draws. Its four years since they met in the league with the last encounter resulting in a Tipperary victory by 0-23 to 0-16 at Semple Stadium on March 1 20 09.  Clare’s last league win over Tipperary was in 2005 at Semple Stadium when they had four points to spare on a scoreline of 1-16 to 0-15.  Tickets will need to be purchased at the booths – there will be no cash accepted at the stiles.

DINNY CAHILL COACHES ST. THOMAS’S TO ALL IRELAND SUCCESS

Well done to Dinny Cahill of Kilruane MacDonagh’s who added another accolade to his string of coaching successes with the victory of St. Thomas’s of Galway in the AIB All Ireland club hurling final recently. There was also a Tipperary connection with the losing side as former Roscrea player and Tipperary underage player, Trevor Fletcher played his part scoring a goal for Kilcormac Killoughey.

COMERAGH COLLEGE WIN VS B FINAL

On Thursday March 21, Comeragh College, Carrick On Suir defeated Davis College, Mallow in the Munster Vocational Schools ‘B’ Final by 2-8 to 0-4. The game was played in terrible weather conditions in Ballygiblin, Co Cork. Poor underfoot conditions, a very cold gale force wind blowing in all directions and rain made it impossible for free flowing hurling. Comeragh College adapted best to the conditions to lead at half time 1-4 to 0-2. The goal was scored by Carrick Swans’ Dean Fitzgerald. As the second half progressed Comeragh College began to get totally on top in defence and midfield with Carrick Davins’Kurtis Walsh and Carrick Swan pair Gavin O’ Halloran and Jack Cooke winning their individual battles while up front Swans Luke Gahan, Dean Faulkner and Tommy McGrath all did well to stop the ball getting cleared easily. Ill-discipline nearly left Mallow back into the game with a number of frees moved forward for arguing with the referee but the conditions made it diffi cult for Glenn Kennefick of Davis College and Glen Rovers to capitalise. With just three minutes left, Jack Cooke’s shot from distance deceived James Buckley of Davis College and Clyda Rovers and went all the way to the net to make it 2-8 to 0-4. A delighted Comeragh College’s captain, Gavin O’ Halloran accepted the cup. Team: Daniel Walsh (Carrick Swan); Sean Griffin (Ballyneale), Scott Hogan (Carrick Swan), Cian Foley (Carrick Swan); Raymond Cooke (Carrick Davins), Gavin O’ Halloran (Carrick Swan – Captain), Declan Hennebry (Clonea Power); Jack Cooke (Carrick Swan), Kurtis Walsh (Carrick Davins); Eric O’ Halloran (Carrick Swan), Luke Gahan (Carrick Swan), Patrick O’ Connell (Ballyneale); Tommy McGrath (Carrick Swan), Dean Fitzgerald (Carrick Swan), Dean Faulkner (Carrick Swan)

ROSCREA IN ALL IRELAND JUNIOR B FINAL

Good luck to Roscrea who will play Tubber of Clare in the All-Ireland junior B hurling tournament on Saturday March 30 at 2pm in Killeedy GAA Grounds, Raheenagh, Co. Limerick. Roscrea defeated Tubber previously in the Munster final and qualified for the final by defeating Kilmacow of Kilkenny of 2-4 to 0-8.

ALLIANZ FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Tipperary’s senior footballers continued their recent run of good form with their fourth successive Allianz league victory when they defeated Leitrim by 2-15 to 0-14 at Semple Stadium on Sunday last. After 6 rounds of games, except for Clare and London who have played 5 each, Limerick have 10 points, Tipperary and Offaly 8 points and Clare 6 points. Tipperary and Offaly meet in their final game on Sunday April 7th in Tullamore with promotion the likely prize for the winner. If Clare defeat London next Saturday, their final game against Limerick will decide the second promotion spot. If London defeat Clare, then Limerick will be guaranteed promotion irrespective of their final game result.
