COUNTY UNDER 21 HURLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The county under 21 A hurling semi-finals will be played this Sunday December 23. Clonoulty Rossmore will play Killenaule in Leahy Park, Cashel at 12 noon and Kilruane MacDonaghs will play Thurles Sarsfields at 1.30pm in Templemore. Extra time will be played in both games if necessary and the final is scheduled for Sunday December 30. It is interesting to note that all 4 clubs have a prominent recent history of involvement in the latter stages of the County under 21 championship. Kilruane MacDonaghs have won 5 of the last 7 North titles and Thurles Sarsfields have won 5 of the last 7 Mid titles. Killenaule won 6 South Under 21 A Hurling titles in a row from 2000 to 2005. The next 6 titles were shared between Carrick Swan (3), Ballingarry (2) and Moyle Rovers before Killenaule regained the title on Sunday last. Clonoulty-Rossmore have won 6 of the last 8 West Under 21 A Hurling titles.

In the B championship Golden Kilfeacle defeated Skeheenarinky last weekend to qualify for the final. The second semi-final between Kildangan and Upperchurch Drombane will be played in Templetuohy on Saturday December 22 at 1.30pm. The final is scheduled for Saturday December 29.

COUNTY CONVENTION

FROM TIPPERARY GAA SCENE BY COUNTY PRO GER RYAN

Congratulations to John Smith (Durlas Og) on being elected County Coaching and Games Development Officer at last Monday night’s County Convention. He replaces Nicholas Moroney (St. Patrick’s) who has completed his 5 year term. We thank Nicholas for his contribution to the progress made in coaching and games development over the last 5 years and wish him well in his new role as Chairman of St. Patrick’s club.

FOOTBALL BOARD CONVENTION

Congratulations to the new officers of the Football Board who were elected at the Football Convention last week. Officers elected were Chairman – Joe Hannigan (Shannon Rovers); Vice-Chairman – Hugh Coghlan (Moyne Templetuohy); Secretary – JJ Crowley (Grangemockler Ballyneale); PRO – PJ Leahy (Moyne Templetuohy). Special thanks are due to outgoing Chairman and Secretary, Noel Morris and Michael Power respectively, who both have made a great contribution to the GAA in Tipperary and hopefully will make further contributions in the future. They shall have treasured memories of Tipperary’s minor football All Ireland success in 2011 and their leadership of the Football Board contributed significantly to that success. They leave Tipperary football on very sound foundations from which the new officer board will seek to achieve further success.

DIVISIONAL CONVENTIONS

There have been a number of new divisional officers elected in recent weeks. We wish new West Board Chairman, Tom English, new South Board Secretary, Seamus Mullins and new Mid Board Treasurer, Liz Flanagan success for their terms and send our good wishes and thanks to their predecessors, Roger Kennedy, Noel Byrne and Jim Max respectively.

REFEREES COURSE

A course for those interested in becoming referees will be held on February 13, 18, 20 and 25 2013 in Sarsfields Centre, Thurles commencing each night at 8pm. It is an important objective of the County’s Strategic Plan and the Referees Committee to recruit new referees. It is important that anybody who intends taking the course is committed to being available to referee games on a regular basis. This is essential both to gain experience and to justify the effort put in to training new referees. Refereeing can be very rewarding and we would encourage every club to ensure they have at least one trained and qualified referee. The form to apply to attend the course is available on the Tipperary GAA website,www.tipperary.gaa.ie

DECLAN BROWNE ON TIPP MID WEST RADIO

To mark the retirement of Declan Browne from the playing fields, Jonathan Cullen  will be presenting a two hour show with Declan on Thursday December 27 between 10am and 12 noon on Tipp Mid-West Radio. If people are not able to tune in via their radio it will also be on line at www.tippmidwestradio.com. As well as discussing his GAA career and life to date Jonathan will also be playing some of Declan’s favourite music. There will also be many special guests on the programme including Sean Kelly, Seamus McCarthy and Paul Fitzgerald.  We wish Declan all the very best for the future.
