Padraic Maher ready to face Kilkenny

Padraic Maher

TIPPERARY star Padraic Maher has declared himself fit for Sunday’s league showdown with Kilkenny after overcoming a back problem

The Thurles Sarsfields man was due to line out for Liam Sheedy’s Munster side when they beat Connacht in last weekend’s M Donnelly Inter-provincial hurling final in Ennis but withdrew due to the injury which cast doubt on his participation this weekend.

“My back was at me but hopefully all is okay now,” Maher said ahead of Sunday’s clash with the All-Ireland champions at Semple Stadium.

Both Tipp and Kilkenny are coming off the back of opening-day league defeats, to Cork and Galway respectively.

Eamon O’Shea’s side were miles off the pace against the Rebels, and the Cats were comprehensive winners when the sides last met in the championship last year.

And with just five fixtures in Division 1A, Maher warned that Tipp need to pick up points to keep their interest in the league alive.

“They (Kilkenny) made bits of us in August, we have no qualms about that,” he said. “We just want to get the wins in because we do want to be involved at the business end of the league.

“Everybody is capable of beating everybody in the league this year and we don’t want to be getting dragged into any battle at the wrong end of the table.

“We want to be involved at the business end of the league so it’s very important that we do try and get a win on Sunday.”
