Former IFA Leader Hall of Fame winner for 2013

 

The former General Secretary of the Irish Farmers Association (IFA) and current Chairman of FBD Holdings – the insurance giant – has been chosen as  the Hall of Fame winner for 2013 by the Tipperary Association Dublin.

 

Announcing the winner, Liam Myles, President of the Tipperary Association Dublin gave a brief outline of Berkery’s career and achievements:

 

Michael Berkery, a native of Toomevara, joined the IFA in 1978 as Secretary to the National Pigs Committee. Previously he had trained and worked in the pig industry.

 

He was appointed to the top management position in IFA – General Secretary – in April 1983 and served over 25 years in that position. In this capacity he led the country’s main farm organisation at national, EU and international level alongside eight IFA Presidents.

 

His molded this diverse group of farmers into a powerful political machine as evidenced by the many successful campaigns the IFA engaged in during his stewardship.

 

Michael Berkery’s real success was down to his political judgement and keen negotiating skills. He never kept his eye off the “big picture. As a strategist and leader he ensured that through the efforts if IFA that the views and issues of farmers and the farming industry were highlighted at National, EU and International levels. His contribution has made the IFA one of the strongest voluntary organisations in Irish Society.

 

Among his various other roles he led the IFA negotiations in Social Partnership from the start in 1987 and played a major role as a member of COPA (European Farmer Organisation body) and the ESRI.

 

Meanwhile he found time to become a director of the Agricultural Trust (publishers of the Irish Farmers Journal) and FBD Trust. In these roles he had a significant influence in awarding financial support to a range of important agricultural education, research and other projects which benefitted the farming and agricultural community he loved and served.

 

A director and Board member of FBD Holdings since 1989, he was elected as Chairman in 1996 and still holds the position. In this capacity, the Tipperary man heads up one of the strongest businesses in Ireland with profits running at over €51 million, premium income of €350 million and assets of $1 billion.

 

In conclusion, Myles stated “his success as a leader of Irish farmers over 25 years, his enormous contribution to the improvement of the economic wellbeing of farm families all over the country and his Chairmanship of one of Ireland’s most successful and thriving businesses makes Michael Berkery a very deserving candidate for the award of the Association’s Hall of Fame for 2013”

 

The presentation of the award will take place on Saturday May the 3rd in the Louis Fitzgerald Hotel, Dublin. The award is sponsored by Liam and William Aherne of the Palace Bar
