Billy Coffey’s day as Mascot

On 12 February I was picked by the Tipperary Supporters Club
to be the official team mascot for the Tipperary Senior Hurling Team
in the opening game of the Allianz Hurling League versus Kilkenny.
Mr John Coman, PRO of the Tipperary Supporters Club met us outside
Semple Stadium and took me and my family into the ground.
There John gave us gifts of Tipperary pens, radios and as it was
raining, Tipperary Umbrellas. From there we went to get a match
programme and John pointed out that my picture and a bit about me
was printed in the programme. I got extra copies to give to my
grandparents and to show my friends at school.

John took us to our seats in the Old Stand and introduced us to Walty
Moloney and Ronan Quirke of Tipp FM fame.   From there I went down onto the hallowed turf and joined the full squad
for the team photograph and warm up.
I met Brendan Cummins, Shane McGrath and The Bonnar Maher.
From there I met the Referee and went in with Tipperary Captain Conor
O’Mahony for the toss.

As the game was about to start I was taken up to the Tipp FM Studio to
listen to Paddy Finucane and his live commentary of the game.
It was really strange to listen to Paddy whilst watching the game live.
A half time Paddy interviewed me about the game and the day I was
having. All of my family and friends got to hear me on the radio.
At half time I was taken to the Setanta Sports Studio and got to see all
of the TV monitors and meet with Nicky English.

My favourite players are Eoin Kelly and Lar Corbett – unfortunately none
of which played on Saturday night.
However Ian O’Connor of TippFM found out that Lar was down in the Tipperary dugout
watching the game and he took met down to meet my hero, Lar spoke with
me and allowed me to have my picture taken with him.
I was then introduced to County Board Chairman Mr. Barry O’Brien who
spoke to me about the game.

From there I went and watched the rest of the match. I want to say
thank you to the Tipperary Supporters Club for a chance to be
mascot and though Tipperary did not get the result I hoped for I had a
fantastic day.
