There’s no disputing the headline item this week: Lar is back. His departure last February was a bombshell and now his return is equally dramatic. Lar, it seems, doesn’t do predictability. The announcement of his second coming has certainly reinvigorated the scene after the disappointment of the league. The buzz has returned to Tipperary hurling – and in good time just ahead of the championship opener. Otherwise there was plenty of club activity at the weekend with reigning champions scrambling draws in three divisions. The press announcement from the County Board on Sunday last was typically formal. They were ‘pleased to announce the return of Lar Corbett to the Tipp SH panel’. In the nature of these announcements there was to be no longwinded explanation. Lar had been preoccupied in past months ‘developing his business activities and is now once again in a position to give the necessary commitment to being a member of the panel’. That was it, curt and concise. Lar would ‘recommence training immediately’. There’s no doubt it’s welcome news that will put pep in the step of Tipperary fans everywhere. Coming at a time when Seamus Callanan is showing a return to finer form and ‘Bonner’ Maher is back playing ball once again the uplift in mood is palpable. Mind you it will hardly quell the rumour mill which has been fascinated by this entire story. Retiring for ‘business reasons’ is so clichéd nowadays that everybody believes it’s simply code for something more juicy. So the conspiracy theorists have a field day. And in this underworld of nod and wink Tommy Dunne has been the victim, the perceived villain of the peace. One wonders will Lar’s willing return now go some way to counteracting the nastier insinuations. There’s no doubt Lar’s return is a major boost to the team and, I suspect, an item of huge relief for the management also. The goal-machine that was Corbett in recent seasons gave our attack an exciting dimension one that others feared. The lightning pace, silky touch and deadly finishing was enough to give seasoned defenders the wobbles. In full flow Lar could light up any arena, so there’s no doubt hurling in general is richer for his return. Of course the problem now will be to calm expectations. Our shortage of goals during the recent league series has been well noted but it will be asking a lot for Lar to instantly turn on that particular tap once again. He’s played no competitive hurling since the county semi-final on October 2 last so one can hardly expect an instant impact now on his return. One assumes the Limerick game comes too soon for Lar to play any significant part in the action. A more practical target must be a potential Munster semi-final on June 24 should we get over Limerick. Hopefully by August, when the business end of the championship kicks in, he should be revving up to peak performance. Anyway it’s great to have him back. His career and contribution deserves a tidier encore than the events of the past six months. Meanwhile a Tipperary team travelled to Clonlara in Clare on Sunday evening for a field opening, which the visitors won by a single point. It was a makeshift Tipperary side on duty but perhaps the most noteworthy contribution was from Seamus Callanan who was credited with 1-8, 1-3 from play. Since his comeback from injury Callanan has struggled with his form but last weekend seems to have marked a return to sharpness, which is timely news indeed. He was the star show it seems on Saturday night also in Drom’s one-point win over Loughmore in the Mid. A fortnight out from the championship opener this is indeed welcome news. In general the story on the injury front appears to be positive with the walking wounded on the way back to full health. Donagh Maher played for Tipp on Sunday night while Paul Curran was in action for Mullinahone down South on Saturday. Patrick ‘Bonner’ Maher is also back in action so the omens are good as we count down to the Limerick game. Seamus Hennessy too has returned for Kilruane though it appears he’s a long way off returning to county action. There was plenty of action on the club front last weekend with games in all divisions and some interesting outcomes. I the Mid reigning champions, Loughmore, fell one short of Drom\Inch, the form team in the division, while in the North, South and West all the defending champions had to do with draws. Up North Portroe pulled off a big result with a draw against Toomevara. Liam Sheedy is this year coaching his native club and clearly doing a useful job. I saw them earlier in the county league and they seemed well organised and spirited as you’d expect from a team under Sheedy’s baton. Incidentally the same Liam Sheedy is a busy man these days. After the 2010 All Ireland he retired because of work commitments – now where have we heard that before? – but this year apart from his home club he’s finding time for a role with Newmarket in Clare as well as involvement in Tyrone. In his spare time then he earns a few quid – quite a few according to recent reports on pundit payments – as an RTE analyst. He’s a busy man alright. Down South at the weekend Carrick Swans came close to a major coup against Mullinahone before an Eoin Kelly pointed free rescued a draw for the reigning champions. It appears to have been a lively game at Kilsheelan. Paul Kelly was sent off for a second yellow and Mullinahone came from behind to save the day. It was a bad weekend all round for divisional champions with Clonoulty in the West having to salvage a draw against Kickhams. After losing to Annacarty and Cappawhite in previous rounds you wouldn’t get too many backers for Kickhams in this one. However, these local derbies often take on a life of their own which at times throws logic out the window. It’s amazing how Kickhams always seem to find something special when they face Clonoulty and previous form lines are rendered redundant. They did it again this time forcing Clonoulty to come from behind to salvage a draw. I’ve heard a few reports on the game speak highly of David Butler’s input to the Kickhams effort. The game had three players sent off. John Devane, Clonoulty, and Damien McGrath, Kickhams, were two unlikely candidates for red cards, I would have thought. Clonoulty’s Conor Ryan was the third player to see red. Clonoulty also lost Thomas Butler to what appeared to be a recurrence of that knee injury which sidelined him last year. It all puts the West champions into an awkward position because they’ll now be without their suspended players for the semi-final. It’s been a troubled start to Clonoulty’s season. In the other West game at the weekend Eire Og got the verdict on Cappawhite after a goalkeeping blunder proved very costly near the end. There’s now one important game left in the West with Cashel to face Aherlow, after which the knock-out pairings will become clearer. In the Mid at the weekend I saw Boherlahan rescue their season with a spirited display against Holycross. As with all games the big wind that blew at the Ragg was a major factor. Holycross were 1-7 to 0-3 up at half time, Boherlahan failing to score from play in that spell. Amazingly Holycross failed to score at all in the second half as Boherlahan rallied strongly to eventually win by three. Goalie, Joe Ryan, hit two massive points from frees for Boherlahan, the second from about thirty yards from his own goal. A bit like Kickhams and Clonoulty in the West there’s little love lost between Boherlahan and Holycross in the Mid so this was a significant one for both teams. The result puts Holycross out of the Mid championship and earns Boherlahan a shot at Sarsfields in a quarter-final. In the other Mid game at the Ragg on Sunday Bracken’s hammered Upperchurch to top the group. The ‘Church were without James Barry but the Templemore side was minus Shane Bourke so you’d expect some cancelling of the losses there. Shane Bourke seems to be out of the reckoning for Tipperary too because of that injury, which is disappointing at a time when others are returning. The upshot of these Mid games now is that Drom and Brackens are through to the semi-finals while the quarter-final pairings are Boherlahan v. Sarsfields and Loughmore v. Upperchurch. Both Moycarkey and Holycross are out of the divisional race and now await the county open draw. A lot of games are now played in all four divisions but very little is sorted out apart from the Mid. In the West for example all teams are still in the race for divisional honours with Kickhams’ fate dependent on that final game between Cashel and Aherlow. I suppose you could argue that the ‘real’ championship has yet to begin in most divisions. Anyway the club business now takes a breather as that Munster championship opener takes centre stage. Team selection and related matters will be the hot topic as we gear up to face the Shannonsiders. All of which is matter for next week.

Tipperary 2-12 Clare 1-14

By Gerry Quinn for the Irish Examiner newspaper

Tipperary edged out their Clare hosts by a point in an entertaining senior hurling challenge at the official opening of the Clonlara GAA facilities last night. Seamus Callanan was the star man for the winners, hitting 1-8 in an impressive display and his accuracy helped the Premier County to a two points interval lead (0-9 to 0-7).

Callanan had 1-1 within two minutes of the restart as Tipperary began to pull clear. But Davy Fitzgerald’s men never buckled and even though they conceded another goal, in the 55th minute from Noel McGrath, they tagged on some good points to remain in touch. A goal by Clare sub Colin Ryan from a 20m free with five minutes remaining kept them in contention. Ryan had another effort deep in injury time to snatch the win but this attempt flew over the bar.

Scorers for Tipperary: S Callanan (1-8, 3f, 2 65’s), N McGrath (1-0), S Curran (0-3), D Collins (0-1).

Dear Tipperary Supporter ELECTRIC IRELAND MUNSTER MINOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP From TIPPERARY GAA SCENE By County PRO Ger Ryan Congratulations to the Tipperary minor hurlers [...]

Dear Tipperary Supporter

ELECTRIC IRELAND MUNSTER MINOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP

From TIPPERARY GAA SCENE By County PRO Ger Ryan

Congratulations to the Tipperary minor hurlers and management team on qualifying for the Electric Ireland Munster minor hurling semi-final by defeating Kerry by 6-21 to 0-11 in the first round on Wednesday evening last at Semple Stadium. Tipperary will play Waterford in the Munster semi-final on Friday, June 29 at Semple Stadium but there is a possibility this game may be brought forward to the Wednesday or Thursday night of the same week. Tipperary have lost their last 2 minor championship encounters with Waterford. Last year Waterford won by 2-16 to 1-13 in the first round at Walsh Park and in 2009 they won the Munster Final at Semple Stadium by 0-18 to 1-13. Tipperary’s last victory over Waterford was in 2003 when they won a first round game at Semple Stadium by 1-9 to 0-10. Waterford have a strong team again this year having defeated Clare by 1-20 to 3-13 after extra time in Ennis last Wednesday.

OPEN NIGHT FOR TIPPERARY SENIOR HURLERS

The GAA nationally has requested all counties to hold an open night for supporters on this coming Thursday or Friday evening. These events are part of the national campaign to promote this years football and hurling championships. The theme of this year’s promotion is to encourage as many as possible to attend championship games using the slogan “nothing beats being there”. There will be plenty of attractive ticket packages for provincial and national championship games all designed to make it easy and affordable for supporters, particularly families, to attend games. Tipperary’s open night will be at Semple Stadium on Thursday evening, May 10 from 6pm to 7.30pm. Supporters will get to meet the senior hurling players and management and get autographs on jerseys, hurleys etc. Supporters are also welcome to remain on to see the team train afterwards. Unfortunately the senior footballers will not be available for the open evening as they are playing a challe nge game. We hope as many supporters as possible can come along onThursday night and show their support for the team. The first round Munster championship games for both footballers and hurlers against Kerry and Limerick respectively at Semple Stadium on Sunday May 27 are only a few weeks away and those games present a unique opportunity to come out and support both teams as they kick off what hopefully will be successful championship campaigns.

ALLIANZ HURLING LEAGUE FINAL & THE STAR CAMOGIE LEAGUE FINAL

Well done to all at Semple Stadium for ensuring the smooth and efficient running of the Allianz hurling league final between Kilkenny and Cork and the Camogie League final between Cork and Wexford at Semple Stadium last Sunday. Kilkenny’s comfortable win will see them enter the championship as strong favourites to win their 6th All Ireland title in 7 years.

MUNSTER JUNIOR FOOTBALL AND INTERMEDIATE HURLING

Tipperary will play Kerry in the Munster Junior Football championship and Limerick in the Munster Intermediate Hurling championship in a double header at MacDonagh Park on Saturday May 26.

ELECTRIC IRELAND MUNSTER MINOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Tipperary will play Cork in the Munster minor football championship semi-final at Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Wednesday May 16 at 7:30pm. They last met in the 2011 Munster minor football final at Killarney which Tipperary won by 3-11 to 1-9. In the 2010 semi-final Cork won by 2-12 to 2-9 at Semple Stadium and in the 2009 semi-final at Pairc Ui Chaoimh Tipperary won by 0-13 to 0-10 after extra time. Both counties have good teams this year so a close encounter is likely in this high stakes game as the loser is eliminated from the championship with the winners going on to the Munster final and a guarantee of an All-Ireland quarter final place.

PLAYING RULE CHANGES

Please note the following Playing Rule changes which were passed at Congress on Saturday, April 14. These changes will become operative from May 14 and are to be implemented in all competitions. 1. Football Only – “Square Ball” – This has been amended to allow a player enter the small rectangle once the final deliberate play of the ball has been made, i.e as soon as the player kicks, hand-passes, fist passes or deliberately flicks the ball into the small rectangle then the attacking player may enter. The rule is unchanged with regard to “Set Play” i.e. Free Kicks, Line Balls and 45s – in these instances players are not permitted to enter the small rectangle before the ball.
2. Hurling and Football – an additional Power of the Referee has been added as follows: “To consult, on a needs basis, with a linesman or umpire(s) – where neutral – in order to establish matters of fact. In the case of the Umpires, this shall include consultation concerning the validity of a score when the Referee is in doubt”. This rule change gives the referee additional power to consult with the linesmen and umpires and will be particularly relevant in the adjudication on “square balls”. 3. Hurling and Football – Rule 2: The Players, Rules of Specification – this has been amended to allow substitutions be made when the referee has stopped play after a score or wide or for a free, sideline puck/kick or where the Referee has stopped play for medical attention to an injured player. Previously substitutions could only be made when the ball had gone out of play following a score or a wide, or when a stoppage in play was called by the referee for medical attention t o an injured player.

GAA CENTRAL COMMITTEES

New GAA President, Liam O’Neill has announced the membership of the central committees which will be in office for his term as present. Tipperary has been awarded two committee chairs – Liz Howard of the National Presentation and Awards Committee and Ger Ryan of the Medical, Scientific and Player Welfare Committee and the following committee memberships – Con Hogan (Central Hearings Committee), Sean Fogarty (Central Appeals Committee), Willie Barrett (National Referees Committee), Ed Donnelly (IT and Communications Committee) and John Costigan (Child Protection and Welfare Appeals Committee). Jimmy Darcy from Drom and Inch who works for the GAA in Croke Park is Secretary of the National Games Development Committee.

GAA SOCIAL MEDIA GUIDELINES

Many of our units are now actively using and engaging with our members and supporters through social media and in particular, Facebook and Twitter. For this reason, GAA Social Media Policies and Guidelines and a step by step social media setup guide have been devised to assist and guide our units in best practice around this area. These documents are available on the GAA website, www.gaa.ie and we would encourage club officials to distribute these documents to all members and in particular to those individuals who may be looking after club social media networks. Clubs will also receive a communication shortly from the County PRO asking them to register their digital channels with the GAA. It is important that Clubs fill out this form. In that way, anyone who speaks on behalf of the GAA is authorised to do so, ensuring we work together to give the GAA a positive online presence.

TIPPERARY SUPPORTERS CLUB GOLF CLASSIC

The Tipperary Supporters Club 27th annual golf classic will take place on Thursday and Friday May 10 and 11 at the County Tipperary Golf Club at Dundrum House Hotel. The team entry fee this year is being maintained at €600 for a team of 4 for golf and 4 course meal to acknowledge our appreciation of the great support we have had from so many people over the years and given that the economic environment is still extremely difficult. Tee sponsorship is also available at €200 per tee. The Tipperary Hurlers have given us tremendous entertainment over the last three years reaching three successive All-Ireland Finals. This has necessitated increased assistance from the Supporters Club. Sponsorship or a team or tee for the golf classic will help give our management and team every opportunity to regain the All-Ireland title this year. To enter a team or sponsor a tee, please contact John Tierney, Supporters Club Chairman on 01 6217880, 087 6821398 or jpt@eircom.net. All funds will be used to defray costs for looking after the team preparation for this year’s championship. (Note to be eligible for the main prizes, all team members must have GUI handicaps).

Please mail your team entry, to John Tierney, Chairman, Tipperary Supporters Club at 105 Laraghcon, Lucan Village, Co. Dublin
