Report from the web site

Tipperary are through to the quarter-finals of the Allianz Hurling League following a three-point victory over Dublin at Semple Stadium this afternoon. A three-point win for the home side ensured a fourth-placed finish in Division 1A, with Dublin condemned to a relegation playoff against Waterford.

It was a nervy afternoon in Thurles as Tipp showed admirable character to set up a clash with Division 1B’s top side Cork next weekend. Tipp were six points behind in the first half, 0-3 to 0-9, but they rallied to trail by just a point at the break, 0-9 to 0-10. And with the breeze at their backs in the second half, Tipp displayed some of their best form of the year so far.

Eamon O’Shea’s side hadn’t won since the opening round against Waterford but when they needed it most, Tipp produced a big performance. Patrick ‘Bonner’ Maher finally got past a previously unbeatable Gary Maguire for the only goal of the game in the 47th minute and while the sides were level twice after that, Tipp finished well to collect maximum points.

In front of 4,768 spectators, Séamus Callanan finished with 0-11 for Tipperary, with Dublin’s Alan McCrabbe hitting 0-10. Callanan’s excellent League form continued but captain Brendan Maher was also exceptional for Tipperary at centre back.

Dublin went for goal from a 20m free with 13 minutes remaining as they chased an elusive goal and another glorious opportunity went begging deep in stoppage time. When a point would have seen Tipp and Dublin’s Allianz League positions reversed, Niall McMorrow dropped an effort short when unmarked on the 45m line.
