Thurles CBS reach Dr Harty Cup Final match report

O’Neill on fire for Thurles

THURLES CBS will look to bridge a 53-year gap on March 8 when they contest the Harty Cup final against St Caimin’s or Ardscoil Rís.

The Tipperary school has not captured the trophy since 1956 but last year’s beaten finalists will start as hot favourites in next month’s decider having seen off Blackwater CS in Ardfinnan last Saturday.

Blackwater put fellow Waterford outfit and holders De La Salle to the sword at the quarter-final stage but they could not cope with Thurles’ Kieran Morris and John O’Neill.

The former Tipperary minor stars combined for 10 points of their side’s tally and after leading by 0-7 to 0-5 at half-time, Thurles stepped on the gas after the break and tacked on some fine scores as O’Neill burst into life with three from play.

The comfortable nature of this win is all the more noteworthy when injuries to stars James Barry and Stephen Maher are taken into account.

The talented pair missed last Saturday’s semi-final and coach Damian Young indicated that they will not be ready in time for the final.

If Thurles do manage to secure the Harty Cup, they will become the first Tipperary team since Templemore CBS in 1978 to capture the coveted title.
