Waterford Crystal Cup – Tipperary vs. UCC – Round-up

Tipperary defeated UCC by 1-17 to 1-5 in the quarter-final of the Waterford Crystal Cup at Nenagh on Sunday. UCC started well with two early points before Tipperary took control. Points from Shane McGrath, Eoin Kelly (free), Joe Ceaser and substitute Seamus Callinan put Tipperary in front by 0-4 to 0-2 after the first quarter of play. The first goal of the match arrived in the 16th minute when Tipperary full-forward Seamus Butler kicked the ball past UCC goalkeeper Anthony Nash. Further points by Kelly (2 frees), Pat Kerwick and McGrath helped put Tipperary in to a 1-8 to 0-3 interval lead.

Tipperary began the second half with a good point by Pat Kerwick and further points by Callinan (3) and Butler had Tipperary in front by 1-13 to 0-5.  UCC got a consolation goal in the 55th minute when Mike Shanahan hit an overhead shot to the net but at the final whistle, Tipperary were winners by 12 points, 1-17 to 1-5.

Best for Tipperary were Eamon Corcoran, Conor O’Mahony, Joe Ceaser, Shane McGrath, Seamus Callinan, Pat Kerwick and Willie Ryan.  Tipperary will now play CIT in the semi-final on Sunday next at a Tipperary venue to be confirmed.
