GALWAY’S recent aristocrats at this grade took their eighth All-Ireland title thanks to two soft goals in Thurles yesterday.

But considering St Brigid’s Loughrea actually got a fourth goal which the umpires didn’t spot in the second half, justice was certainly done as they powered home to take their second title in three years.

Captained by Joe Cooney’s son Joseph and led brilliantly by wing-back Mark Horan and flying forwards Dara Herlihy and Shane Dolan, they found the net after just 32 seconds when a Dolan cross from the wing bobbled in the goalmouth to beat goalkeeper Jason Sampson.

St Brigid’s second goal was much slicker, when Cian Kelly and Dolan combined to put Herlihy through after 24 minutes. But only those goals divided the sides at half-time when it was 2-7 to 0-8.

However, Roscrea Community College — contesting their first senior final — responded brilliantly on resumption, seizing the momentum to cut the deficit back to two points thanks to Jason Fitzpatrick’s metronomic free-taking and some great scores from Shane McKelvey and Sean Cleary.

But a stop was put to their gallop in the 38th minute when Loughrea midfielder Paul Hoban went for a long-range point from the half-way line and it found the net over the goalkeeper’s head for a soft third goal which swung the momentum back to the Galway side.

Loughrea actually got a fourth goal when brilliant full-forward Herlihy had a shot come back off the inside post soon after, but the umpires incorrectly judged it had come off the crossbar and ignored their protests.

And, although Roscrea’s Fitzpatrick goaled with a penalty in the final few minutes and Loughrea were reduced to 14 men in those dying stages — when Sean Sweeney got a second yellow card — the talented Westerners’
more lethal inside forwards proved the difference.
