Well done to the Tipperary hurlers who qualified for the National Hurling League Final for the second year running thanks to a hard earned 1-17 to 1-15 victory over Galway at Pearse Stadium on Sunday. Our last game in the League round robin games is against Limerick on Sunday week April 19th at Semple Stadium while Tipperary will play Kilkenny in the final on May 3rd. Tipperary drew with Galway in the 2008 National League at Pearse Stadium on March 9th of last year. However, 13 months later only 8 of the 30 players who started that game started last Sunday’s match. The six Tipperary players to line out in both matches included Eamon Buckley, Paul Curran, Conor O’Brien, James Woodlock, Shane McGrath and John O’Brien. Galway had 13 changes from last year’s team lineout with Fergal Moore and Niall Healy being the only two players to start both games. What a difference a year makes!

The last time Tipperary won 2 National Hurling League titles in a row was in 1965 when coincidentally Kilkenny were also the opposing team in the final. Since the National Leagues were inaugurated in 1925, Tipperary have won 4 titles in years ending with 9 – 1949, 1959, 1979 and 1999.
